Description
Fort Leland, Grave Creek, OR Located in Sunny Valley near Grants Pass, Oregon, Leland was settled in the 1850s and the Post Office established in 1855. The first Postmaster was killed by Indians in 1856 and a stockade was built around a log wayside and the hotel building at Leland. The small town was the gateway to the lower Rogue country where Indians retreated so it became the gathering point of a large force of regular army and volunteers and was known as Fort Leland. Leland's Post Office was closed in 1943. There is no explanation on the photograph of what building this is, but it may be the former Leland Hotel.
