Description
Oswego Iron Works, ca. 1868. Built in 1865 and operated until about 1890, this was the first iron ore blast furnace west of the Rockies. Built on the bank of the Willamette River near the mouth of Oswego Creek in Oswego. The furnace was constructed in 1865 and first used in 1866. The iron ore came from Iron Mountain, just west of the city, and its charcoal was burned in huge pits supplied by the fir forests that lined the shore of Oswego Lake. The furnace was operated until 1890, when a new plant was erected. The new plant was operated spasmodically for three years. From that time until it was dismantled about 1927, it lay idle.
